Mike Keepness has been a landscape/ plein air painter for the past 14 years, he lives in Saskatchewan, Canada in the small town of Fort Qu’appelle located in the Qu’Appelle valley where he is often capturing the subtle beauty of the hills, river and lakes surrounding that area. Mike started off as a wildlife artist, only plein air painting for purpose of the backgrounds of his animal subjects. While doing that Mike ended up falling in love with the landscape, with its shapes and the never-ending moods and color schemes it delivers everyday, with each changing season.

Mike is a self-taught artist with a few mentors along the way, including Dwayne Harty and reading fine art books available for his education in plein air painting and painting from life. Mike has also attended artist’s workshops and Plein Air Conventions over the years.

“Over the past 14 years I have been plein air painting in Wyoming and Montana country and in an around my neighboring home lands of Saskatchewan, Canada. Plein air painting is the backbone of my work, I don’t see any other way but to be able to stand in front the lands you grew up in or have become familiar with; Wyoming and Montana, hearing distant coyote howls and the smell of sage and sweet grass as you capture a fleeting moment in time.
