Presenting the first in a series of exciting, new exhibitions, Brinton Artists in Residence, beginning this September. The 2019 Brinton Artists in Residence show features six diverse, nationally recognized artists who were invited for two-week residencies in 2018 to create art en plein air. This year’s inaugural exhibit, on display in the Jacomien Mars Reception Gallery beginning September 7, includes nearly fifty works in oil, pastel and watercolor by Victor Juhasz (Averill Park, NY), Jessica Garrett (Glendale, AZ), John Potter (Red Lodge, MT), Denise LaRue Mahlke (Waco, TX), Terri Wells (Austin, TX) and Jacob Aguiar (Scarborough, ME).
The Brinton’s Artists in Residence program allows artists the unique opportunity to sketch, draw and paint on The Brinton grounds and also on other scenic locations throughout the area. Resident artists are featured in a group exhibition in the fall of the following year of their residency.
A reception to meet and visit with the 2018 invited artists takes place at The Brinton Museum on Saturday, September 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. The artists’ reception is offered free and open to the public.
The Brinton Artists in Residence exhibit continues through October 20. This exhibition is made possible by generous contributions from Tom & Lisa Thompson, the Edwin T. Meredith Foundation, the Richard Hammer Trust, the Tucker Foundation and Fine Art Connoisseur.
About the Artists:
Victor Juhasz
To say Victor Juhasz is an award-winning artist and illustrator is an understatement. He graduated from the Parsons School of Design and began illustrating for The New York Times in 1974 while still a student. Juhasz is a 2010 Silver Medal award recipient of the prestigious Society of Illustrators (NY) and also the recipient of the Arthur Brown Recognition Award. He has been commissioned by numerous major magazines, advertisers and book publishers including Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Oxford University Press, Sleeping Bear Press, and many more. Victor was part of a United States Troops First Foundation Tour abroad in 2008 and 2010. His work is represented in the permanent collection of the USAF Art Program at the Pentagon through the Society of Illustrators. Juhasz was The Brinton’s featured children’s storybook illustrator in 2016 and was twice a participant in the museum’s Brinton 101 small works exhibitions.
Jessica Garrett
Jessica Garrett had a passion for art beginning at a very young age and started drawing around the age of 3. In 2005, she was awarded a merit scholarship from Scottsdale Artists’ School and participated in workshops with R. A. Heichberger and Chris Saper. Jessica’s artistic interest centers around the subject of landscapes, in particular, radiant sunsets which she paints en plein air. Capturing nature’s varying patterns of light and color have become an obsession for her. She has recently added portraiture to her portfolio. The Brinton’s “Artists in Residence” show includes a self-portrait of the artist. In 2018, Jessica was a recipient of the Governor’s Choice Award at the Cowboy Up exhibition of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona.

John Potter
John Potter was raised in the Upper Great Lakes country – in and off the Lac due Flambeau Ojibwe Indian Reservation in northern Wisconsin – where he acquired a deep love of the outdoors and wildlife. He is a graduate of Utah State University, earning degrees in painting and illustration. Potter prefers painting en plein air and often does so, using his outdoor studies to create larger studio works. John is a member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group of Artists, The Salmagundi club and also a Signature Member of the Rocky Mountains Plein Air Painters. He is the recipient of numerous awards and has participated in shows at The Brinton as a featured illustrator in 2017 and in group exhibitions including Bighorn Rendezvous and The Brinton 101.
John Potter
Denise LaRue Mahlke
Denise LaRue Mahlke has been drawing most of her life and is nationally recognized for her pastels which have been featured in Western Art & Architecture, Southwest Art Plein Air and Pastel Journal. She was honored twice as a recipient of the First Place Award in Landscape with the prestigious Art Renewal Center’s International Salon in Port Reading, New Jersey. Denise is a Master Signature member of American Women Artists, a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America and is an Out-of-State member of the California Art Club.

Terri Wells
Terri Wells describes her artistic muse as being one of two worlds – a deep love of nature and an appreciation for the arts and city life which was fostered by trips to the Art Institute of Chicago and also by a vast collection of public art on exhibit throughout the city. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, Design and Painting in 1982 at Kent State University, following two years at Iowa State University School of Design. She prefers to work in the medium of watercolor and, more recently, abstract sculptures.

Jacob Aguiar
Jacob Aguiar says he has been an artist his entire life. He was an avid lover of the outdoors from an early age. However, it wasn’t until 2011 that his love of art and his love of nature came together. Jacob took a leave of absence from naturopathic medical school and spent that year in the small Northern California town of Sebastopol. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in America, his artistic talents came to life. Jacob is a Signature juried member of the Pastel Society of America and a professional artist member of the Copley Society in Boston.
