Jerry Salinas

Headshot of artist Jerry SalinasJerry developed a serious interest in drawing and painting early in life. At a young age, he had a keen eye and talent in capturing everyday life events on paper and canvas. Many family members were his early subjects and the dining room table was his easel during his formative years as a fine artist.

He briefly attended the Art Institute of Chicago and later transferred to the American Academy of Art where he studied Illustration and Painting. He graduated with a degree in Fine Arts and became an illustrator and storyboard artist for several advertising agencies in Chicago and New York. He balanced his interest in commercial work with his love for fine art by joining the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, where he began painting with Romel de la Torre, Clayton J. Beck III and a community of artists-in-residence and visiting painters.

Jerry’s figures, landscapes, still life and portraits represent the collective wisdom of generations of fine artists – artists who’ve spent their lives learning to see, to understand what they saw, and then inventing ways to describe it in two dimensions. His technique evokes a passion for the subject in front of the easel and a focus on light, color, and form.

Jerry has used the time he has spent living in Illinois, Georgia, and Arizona to explore different styles of art. He has been privileged to have his work critiqued by David Leffel, Marc Chatov, Jim Schell and Greg Kreutz.  Jerry currently teaches a full-time painting program at the prestigious Scottsdale Artists’ School. Since moving to Arizona in 2005, Jerry’s home and the studio has welcomed several visiting artists who are teaching courses at the Scottsdale Artists’ School.
