Birdie Real Bird

Photograph of Birdie Real Bird presenting at workshopBirdie is a retired middle school teacher and member of the Crow Tribe of Indians. She now spends her time making traditional Crow Indian dolls and beading projects. Birdie grew up watching her grandmother and aunts bead. Before long she was making her own dolls and traditional clothes. Her dolls are collected by museums and patrons in the US, Japan and England. She has dolls in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. Birdie was selected in 2009 and 2010 to participate in the National Folk Festival in Butte, MT. Her dolls have appeared in Montana Magazine, and the Montana Art Council paper. In 2005, she traveled the state giving presentations on doll making and traditional Crow Indian life with the National Endowment for the Arts. She also teaches many workshops for adults and children on doll making, beading and the cultural aspects of her tribe. She has exhibited her work at Custer County Art and Historical Museum in Miles City, Montana, and has participated in The Brinton Museum’s small works shows in 2016 and 2017. Birdie will be represented in this year’s The Brinton 101 show opening in November.
