Joel Ostlind Demo

Joel Ostlind presents a Printmaking Demonstration at The Brinton Museum on March 18, 2017
Big Horn, Wyo (March 6, 2017) The Brinton Museum will host a printmaking demonstration on intaglio by Wyoming artist Joel Ostlind in the Jacomien Mars Reception Gallery on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. Ostlind will demonstrate the intaglio process by doing a printing demonstration of a new copper plate entitled, Infinite Wisdom, representative of one of the artist’s iconic subjects, cowboys. A reception for the artist follows in the first floor atrium at 2 p.m. Both the printmaking demonstration and artist’s reception are open to the public and included in the price of regular admission, and free to members.
Joel Ostlind was born in Casper (WY) and has lived in Big Horn since 1990. Cowboys and horses, expansive wide-open spaces and endless skies are all subjects that he draws and paints. In Southwest Art magazine, March 2005, Joel is quoted as saying that a good long piece of scenery reaching out to distant blue hills, put under a bell jar of blue sky, made him happy. It’s a love of the West and an honesty of the printmaking process that makes his work genuine. “You can’t fake it,” says Joel, “It has to be within you to have a spiritual connection to your surroundings.” Ostlind has been featured in numerous exhibitions at The Brinton Museum and is without doubt one of the institutions indisputable treasures. “We are lucky to have such a talented and truly gifted artist in Big Horn,” says Museum Director Kenneth Schuster, “And we are equally fortunate to have him as a good friend of The Brinton.” There is a playful truthfulness in Ostlind’s new print, Infinite Wisdom, which portrays a group of five of cowboys leaning up against a wood fence, their collective knowledge, no doubt, immeasurable.
Ostlind is represented in The American Sporting Print – 20th Century Etchers and Drypointists, a limitededition book on important American printmakers of the 20th century, by John T. Ordeman, published in 2007. He was the featured artist in the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale at the Denver Stock Show in 2002; in a solo exhibition at The Brinton Museum in 2004; and in a one-person show at the University of Wyoming Art Museum in Laramie in 2006. He was a guest participant in The Brinton’s Bighorn Rendezvous Art Show in 2016 and has been featured in the institution’s Small Works Show since 2013.
Ostlind is represented in numerous private collections, as well as public collections including the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson (WY) and the prestigious Art in Embassies Program, a public-private partnership that promotes cultural diversity through exhibitions, permanent collections, site-specific commissions and two-way artists exchanges in more than 200 U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world. The Brinton Museum’s permanent collection includes an almost a complete set of his intaglios.
