Artist-in-Residence Talk: Dwayne Wilcox

The Brinton Museum welcomes Dwayne “Chuck” Wilcox (Oglala) as part of its new Artist-in-Residence program, connecting visiting artists with the museum, its collections, and the community.

During this free public program, Wilcox will share examples of his work, discuss his artistic practice, and demonstrate drawing and quillwork techniques. Best known for his drawings on ledger paper, Wilcox uses humor and parody to explore Native American resilience, contemporary life, and the ongoing relationship between history and the present.

Born in Kadoka, South Dakota, Wilcox received his early education on the Pine Ridge Reservation and became a full-time artist in 1987. His work is represented in museum collections across the United States, including the Smithsonian Institution, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Charles M. Russell Museum, Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, and Harwood Museum of Art at the University of New Mexico.

Wilcox has received numerous honors, including the Oscar Howe Award, Joan Mitchell Foundation Award, and South Dakota Governor’s Award.

Wilcox’s residency at The Brinton Museum will continue the following summer through his participation in Bighorn Rendezvous XII in 2027, connecting the residency program with the museum’s annual celebration of contemporary artists of the American West.
