While attending University of Wyoming (MFA 1981), Jim Jackson taught design classes in the Art Department’s Comprehensive Design Program, and then later worked as Curator of Exhibits in the University Art Museum. Several years later he began working professionally as an artist in Denver, Colorado, selling his paintings through the Kyle Belding Gallery, one of Denver’s finest galleries. During this time, he completed a large award winning (15’x 80’ foot) mural at the Symphony Towers Complex in San Diego among many other commissioned works. Concurrently, Jim designed and constructed fine custom leatherwork for King’s Saddlery, Wyoming’s famous saddle shop. After retiring from King’s Saddlery he was asked to open a shop at The Brinton Museum (Big Horn, Wyoming) where he continues to educate the public about the processes, cultural influences and history of the leather worker’s trade. Jim’s painting studio is located in Sheridan, Wyoming. In 2019 Jim received National Heritage Fellowship as well as the Governor’s Arts Award.
