John was born and raised in Wyoming and graduated from high school in Thermopolis in 1967. His formal art instruction started at Casper College and continued at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts) in Oakland. He obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1972 with a major in Ceramics. He then attended the University of Wyoming to become a teacher. After teaching two years in Chadron, Nebraska, he relocated to Gillette (To his good fortune!). Thirty years and about 6,000 teenagers later, John retired to work in clay full time. Also, to his good fortune, John and his wife have been married 43 years and have three outstanding children. Five grandsons are the icing on the cake. He is proud and humbled to have taught with the high caliber of instructors that were his colleagues during his time in Gillette. They are inspiring.
