Photo of George StricklandBorn in 1943 in San Antonio, Texas, George took art classes in HS and studied at his home town community college. Most of his early art training was from a highly regarded correspondence course. That was enough to get him a position with the local newspaper art department, later working for several advertising agencies as a commercial artist, and ultimately freelancing, then co-owning an art/illustration studio.

In time, commercial art shifted strongly toward computer graphics and George decided to try his hand in the related Fine Arts arena where drawing and painting still reigned. Workshops with Howard Terpning. and other great cowboy artists helped start him in that new direction. Later workshops with William Reese and Jim Wilcox greatly inspired his love for painting outdoors and directly from life.

Plein Air painting has become a catalyst for virtually all of George’s work these days. He has been a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America since 1996, being (PAPA) president for several years. He additionally is a member of the California Art Club (CAC) and the Northwest Rendezvous Group (NWR). He has built a successful art career while garnering many awards through the years as he and his wife moved about the U.S. living, painting and giving workshops
