Sandy Swallow (Oglala Sioux Tribe), A Good Catch, mixed-media, watercolor and collage, 16" x 16"

The Gift

Developed by the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS).

This exhibit is based on a traditional Lakotan narrative about when White Buffalo Woman, an emissary from the Pte Oyate (Buffalo Nation), gave a sacred pipe (White Buffalo Calf pipe) to the Itazipco Oyate, one of seven oyates of the Lakota division of the Oceti Sakowin Confederacy.

Forty-one Lakotan artists, musicians and poets are represented in this show. An illustrated catalog with text and images of the artwork, published by CAIRNS, accompanies the exhibit. Exhibit Curator Craig Howe, Ph.D. will present an educational program during the time period the exhibition is on display.
